Early and rare printed works

The early and rare printed works of the Utrecht University Library collection are kept in several climate-controlled depositories. You can request and consult these documents in the Special Collections Reading Room on the sixth floor of the University Library Uithof.

Search by author and/or title

The early and rare printed works are listed in the Utrecht University Library catalogue. An increasingly large proportion of the early and rare printed works is being digitised and is available online.

Information on a number of subcollections is not available in the catalogue. For these collections, see Subcollections.

Search by subject

Catalogues are available for a number of themed subcollections in the Special Collections Reading Room, with which you can search parts of the collection according to subject.

Search by details of printed works (printer, previous owners etc.)

The library's index of printers lists early printed works according to the country and place of publishing and the printer. The index includes works from the Netherlands and other works in Dutch printed before 1801 and foreign works printed before 1701. A digital list of printers is available, including the names of printers whose works are available in Utrecht University Library.

It is also possible to use the catalogue to search by printer. You can search by the name of the printer, or the country and place of publishing (also possible in combination with the printer/publisher). The card index does not include 18th-century foreign printed works. These are included in the printers index accessible using the catalogue. For early printed works it is also possible to use the catalogue to search for other details:

  • book ownership (provenance details)
  • persons involved in publication: signatories of approbations, authors of panegyrics, persons to whom the publications were dedicated
  • bibliographic references
  • binding details and binders

Of the special search options for early printed works, the printers' details are the most exhaustive, although they are not complete. The other indexes mentioned are still being compiled. For more information, contact the Special Collections Reading Room.

Subcollections

The titles of the works in some subcollections have not yet been included in the catalogue. Items from these collections can be searched for using the subcatalogues in the Special Collections Reading Room. This concerns the following subcollections:

  • Pamphlets: The printed catalogue for Utrecht pamphlets and the annotated catalogues of the other large collections (Knuttel etc.) can be used to search this subcollection. A card index (Kloosterboer catalogue) is also available for the Dutch – mainly 18th-century – pamphlets that are not included in the printed pamphlet catalogues. Many of the pamphlets are also available in full text.
  • Brochures from the 19th century and early 20th century: A card index is available for this subcollection of mainly political, historical and theological documents. The titles are currently being entered into the catalogue.
  • The Gregorius Collection: A card index detailing the periodicals and Catholic and Protestant hymn books can be used to search this collection. For more information, contact the Special Collections Reading Room.

Printed or microfiche catalogues are available for most of the other subcollections. These can also be found in the Special Collections Reading Room. The titles from these collections are also included in the catalogue and/or card index. For an overview of these subcollections, see the Digital Repertory.
